For a small congregation, Pleasantville Community Synagogue has an amazingly active Adult Education program. We have been fortunate over these past few years to have been able to bring in as scholars-in-residence some of the leading lights of Jewish spirituality (Rabbis Lawrence Kushner, Shefa Gold, Marcia Prager, and Chazzan Jack Kessler), of Jewish thought (Drs. Sarah Tauber, Neil Gilman, Michael Chernick, and Alan Morinis), and of Jewish Healing (Rabbis Zahara Davidowitz Farkas and Pamela Wax).
In the past we have offered Adult Education classes and workshops in: Introduction to Judaism, Hebrew, Talmud, Torah and Haftarah Cantillation, the Philosophy of Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel, Jewish Denominations, Jewish Parenting, Women’s Torah Study, Sacred Autobiography; wonderful lay-lead studies of the Jewish calendar, the period called the Omer, and more.
Our new Rabbi, Julie Hilton Danan, holds a Ph.D. in Hebrew Studies, specializing in Rabbinic Literature, and has taught both university and adult education courses for many years. She is planning new offerings in adult education that will be listed here in the coming months.
Currently Rabbi Danan leads a Torah study on Saturdays at 12:30 pm to1:15pm, following the Shabbat Kiddush lunch at noon. She also leads Jewish Spiritual Teachings and Meditation at 9:30 am to 10 am prior to Shabbat services. You can attend these programs whether or not you attend the services. An informal "lunch and learn" is held on Thursdays at noon. Bring a (meatless) bag lunch and join the rabbi for a discussion about the holidays and other Jewish topics. Rabbi Danan is also planning parent education for the Hebrew School.
